My last laptop finally curled up and died after 6 years of hard labour. Unfortunately I hadn't backed up some of my excel and word files so had to take it to a specialist shop to see if they could recover my data. They did, and supplied me with a disk with all my files on. Unfortunately when I open them on my new laptop all I can see is gobbeldy gook. I think this is because the original files were password protected but the recoverd file doesn't ask me for a password. The old files were on XP and I am now on Vista but I have the same problem if I use a friends XP machine aswell.
Any help in assisting me getting into my files would be most welcome.

What type of files are they? If you are trying to open Word documents in Wordpad for example they will appear as gobbledygook.

They were mainly Excel files (excel 97 I think?) but some were word files also and I'm trying to open with excel and word i.e. not wordpad. They don't ask for the password though, just open and show random characters.

It sounds like the files are corrupted. It might be worth speaking to the company that recovered them to see if they can help.
