Before I fork out for a new battery I wondered if there was any chance my current battery is ok and perhaps a virus could be the cause of the problem.

The reason I suspect the possibility of a virus is due to the sudden appearance of the problem.

It started about 2 weeks ago and wasn't long after I performed a system recovery. I plugged the mains lead into my laptop and a red cross appeared. Another occasion and the battery would charge for a short while then say fully charged but only last few minutes. Then it would charge only 6%, now it says it's fully charged.

Thanks

Scott

just a PS to that - just sometimes with Acers you can get a situation where the charger starts playing up, or the jack socket on the laptop is damaged and you get a situation where the battery stops charging in some kind of protection mechanism. Usually you get a message on the lines of "charger is not an Acer charger, battery charging will be unavailable" (thats not the exact wording). You can disable the message in BIOS, but I don't know if that will override the protection or not
The problem here doesn't sound like that, but it may be worth checking
