Hi,
I'm new to these boards & fairly IT literate, having self taught myself everything I know so far but having trouble understanding help forums and technical jargon when looking for advice.
My problem is that my pc keeps crashing. For the last month there have been problems in that the volume would turn itself off or I would hear adverts but not see where they are coming from & a persistant clicking noise. I believe this may be due to some sort of virus?
Well, now computer has crashed & won't restore. I looked online the first few times for help - have gone into safe mode fine, it won't crash then, & have done system restore.( This is a soft ware problem then? not hard drive?) Was fine, seemed to fix until now when even that will not make it work. I can start up but it crashes soon after logging on.

My error message says INVALID_PROCESS_DETACH_ATTEMPT and the technical info says
***STOP: 0x00000006 (0x00000000,0x00000000,0x000000000,0x000000000)

Please can someone offer me easy to understand advice. I want to try & fix it & would appreciate easy to follow instructions. I have windows XP, & my computer is now quite old (about 6 years, a Dell) I'm using my son's to go online to do this! I have moved most important things onto external hard drive before this happened but would still like to retrieve some photos etc before it totally dies. I have cleaned hard drive, it is free from dust.

Thank you

there is no easy to understand advice: this is a little documented error
it seems it COULD be a malfunctiioning device or driver, OR a rogue program with an invalid check file: in other words a viral mutex

You may get help on one of the antivirus forums
Try Bleeping Computer at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34773.html - they are pretty good, but follow the posting rules

I suspect though that without experience in viral cleanups you're probably going to need help with this one
