Hi,
the laptop was working fine until recently, but for some reason now nothing works! I can't connect to the internet, but whenever I click the icon to open the search for networks etc. Program, nothing happens, it doesn't even open! Even normal programs don't work, I've tried running a health check, it opens, but then just freezes and I can't do anything with it. This is the same story for everything else aswell! The laptop is basically just a large paperweight at the moment! I've got limited computer tech knowledge, would restoring to factory defaults help?
Thanks

it probably would, in the assumption your problems are due to viral contamination
but they could equally be due to a bad hard drive
Without knowing more about the machine, and the immediate history prior to the problem, its very hard to offer any specific advice

Will it work / connect OK if you try to start it in "safe mode with networking?"

a follow-up question
Which antivirus program are you using on that machine?
IS it AVAST and / or Threatfire?

Thanks for the replies, have been busy so only just got around to trying. Before it stopped working there were no real problems, one day it worked and the next it didn't! I tried to start it in safe mode, I managed to get it to search for connections, but it still wouldn't connect. Then it froze!
I'm using Kaspersky Internet security.
Thanks

if it won't boot into safe mode, our chances of unpicking it through the forum are pretty slim.
To be honest, if the machine was brought to me to work on, I would boot it with a "live" CD such as VistaPE, or one of the Linux distros such as Knoppix, back up any data and then wipe / reload it (using the factory reset option if its available)
Unless there is a particular reason for NOT wiping it, in a case like this its often quicker to nuke it and start afresh with a clean installation and no worries about hidden contamination
And of course if the problem IS due to a hardware failure, this should become apparent pretty quickly as it will still be faulty after the reload
