Hi, I have a HP Pavilion Computer. On start up all the icons and start menu do not load automatically. There is an error message about the System Index ??
I can get them to appear by going through Task Manager>Run>Explorer but on each start up the same problem exists. The computer is very slow to start up (too many things running at start up?) How could I change to ensure only the necessary programs run at start up, and which are the necessary ones?

Any help would be appreciated.

Jamie

Hi Jamie

You may have an infection but first type msconfig in run and choose "diagnostic startup" reboot, see if it all loads up correctly.

What is your OS and what security apps are you running ?

I had remote help from Norton last night who said I was secure. I am on XP.

Sorry for the delay and thanks for the help. I am running Norton Internet Security.
I restarted in diagnostic startup. Nothing changed. The XP welcome screen loads then the desktop picture appears but with no icons. There is an error box that appears that has Data Execution Prevention on the top and States there is a problem with Content Index Service.

Any Ideas

Jamie

Try going in to Safe Mode, does that give you the same problems? Also can you post the full details of the error, or a screenshot? It might help diagnose!

I had a customer who had a machine with this problem. There are literally 100s of causes for it. I spent many hours trying several of them and none of them helped. In the end I bit the bullet, backed everything up and reinstalled the OS.

Do your self a favour and give up trying to find a fix. You have very little chance of success. Reinstall shouldn't take too long.

Good luck

Can you set up a different user account and see if the same thing happens with that one. If it doesn't it could point to a user profile corruption.
