Sorry not sure if this is in the right area but here goes.

My toshiba laptop has a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR K17A ATA drive which is not finding and CD's, it doesn't even recognise that there is a disk in the drive just ejects and asks for a disk to be inserted.

However it will read dvd's.
I have no idea where to begin with this and any advice would be greatly received??

CDs and DVDs use different wavelengths of light for the laser. From the symptoms you describe, it sounds like the drive is unable to use the correct wavelength for CDs. This basically means the lens needs to be replaced, or more simply the drive needs to be repaired/replaced.

Depending upon your laptop, you don't necessarily have to get the exact same drive. If there is no special bezel for the drive on your laptop, then most will be compatible. Try doing a search for laptop dvd drives - there are companies that will check compatibility for you so you can buy a drive that will work (and probably of higher specification).
