This should be possible, all you need to do is to configure Outlook with your email settings. If you can be specific about the problems you are having we can maybe help further.

just a word of caution here
For most users Outlook Express is actually the better progam to use. its more user-friendly, less likely to go wrong and easier to set up. And also easier to transfer your mail from whenever you finally upgrade from Windows XP to a newer version of Windows
Only reason for using Outlook is if you need the calendaring features, or if you need to link to an Exchange Server. Even then, if you just need a calendar you may be better off using Windows Live Mail
To some extent it depends on who your e-mail provider is
