Helpful suggestions please.
I am experiencing abnormal boot up times running XP prof. The splash screen "loading your personal settings" is taking 10 to 15 minutes to clear, and once cleared I am waiting another 5 minutes for the desktop icons and task bar to load. I have examined my start up menus and deleted anything non-essential but it makes no difference. Where to go from here? Also running Webroot

It could be scrambled software, but my first worry would be that the hard drive is failing
Back up your files and then use the correct test CD from the drive manufacturer to check the drive. However back up your file first as running the test could kill a bad drive
What make / model of drive is it? tell us that and we can point you at the correct download

I have checked in msconfig and normal start up is selected.
I also checked the start list in here and unchecked adobe arm and ctfmon.
I have also run chkdsk.
This seems to have cured the slow start problem.
Thanks all.

I strongly suggest you still test the drives

for the WD download the Data Lifeguard for DOS CD image, burn it, boot from it and carry out the diagnostics
http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=606&sid=30&lang=en

The Samsung drive business is now part of Seagate, so download the Seatools for DOS from http://www.seagate.com/support/internal-hard-drives/desktop-hard-drives/spinpoint-s-series/
Again, burn the CD and test the drive
