Hi This might be correct but i just wanted a second opinion. A friend of mine
has a fujitsu scaleop and her os is windows xp home edition. the other day she started up her pc and got a message saying windows could not start as the following files is missing. windows root system 32\ntoskrnl.exe. now not knowing anything about pc's she got on the phone to a service engineer who
told her that the message means that her hard drive is shot and needs to be replaced. Does anyone know if this is correct as it seems a bit extreme to me.

Thank You

thats a very poor diagnosis based simply on that error.

He may be right, but it could equally be bad memory, bad motherboard, corrupt hard drive following a bad shutdown.....or even a virus.

However, the two commonest causes are
1) the boot.ini file is missing or corrupt
2) the ntoskrnl.exe file itself is missing or corrupt

before condemning any hardware I would try replacing / repairing both, and if that failed then rebuild the software. Only if that failed would I suspect a possible bad drive

Thank you. I'm afraid it is to late for me to do anything about it as she never told me until he had taken the pc away what he had told her. she informed me today that he has told her that he has replaced the hard drive (allegedly)
so we will just have to see what happens.
Thank you for your help.
