|
|
Please can someone help me. I have a dell laptop. I keep getting the same error message coming up, hal.dll file is either missing or corrupt. Think the problem may be the boot.ini file. However, when I re insert the Windows XP disc in the cd rom, it won't work. I have tried everything. Changing the boot order, tried in safe mode with command prompt, you name it I have tried it and everytime the default is WINDOWS but I can't access windows. Is there anyway I can access the boot.ini file without windows????? |

Hi niknsi, welcome to the forums!
Before trying to do anything with the boot.ini file, I would recommend trying to run a manual system restore. _________________ "Microsoft programs are generally bug-free. | Or run the recovery console command prompt and execute bootcfg/rebuild. This will recreate the boot configuration on the instance of windows you select. |

If you still visit this page, and know just a little above average about computers, i might have a solution!
Listen up!
I had this very annoying problem
Dell support gave me up, said that "whatever" and just sent me some xp-repair cds (took 3 weeks, didn't want to wait for them to arrive)
Some heavy googling found out who was the troublemaker, Windows Internet Explorer 8 toghether with some program named "A..." something.
What happened, how unrealistic it even may sound, was that during boot-up, the boot.ini simply got deleted...
Solution? - Well, there isn't any good and non-hard one
I did like this:
1. Download Linux/Ubuntu, and boot from CD (burn the .iso onto a CD): http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download <- Not sure it that's the version, it has to be a Live cd
2. Boot from the CD, you might have to set the BIOS up for that
3. If you got into Ubuntu, take a look around and get confortable with it, it doesn't look that much different from windows
4. Now open your Harddrive where windows is installed inside Ubuntu, and search for a file "boot.ini.backup"
5. Copy the file onto (i think?) c:\, and rename it to "boot.ini"
6. It that's done, reboot, now without the Ubuntu CD.
7. If windows loads, remember, first thing you have to do is remove Internet explorer 8!
8. Try rebooting again, if you get that "boot.ini" is missing again, go through ubuntu once more. If windows won't fire up again after a reboot from windows, then, i can't help you, at least i dont think soo..
Sorry for a messy post, if you want me to rewrite, post here.
And, if you aren't a little experienced with computers, my soloution might not suit you :s |

it is often the boot.ini file, though it can be due to hard drive corruption / failure
replacing the boot.ini file is a good start (I prefer to do it using a VistaPE disk, not a Linux one, but the principle is the same). If that fails then its time to boot to a recovery console and try chkdsk /r - though it may be a good idea to try data recovery using a program like Recuva first - as if chkdsk goes wrong you could lose the lot
If chkdsk fails then you are looking at a reformat - or a new drive |
