I have a new HP mini 1000 series and there was a virus on it that would not allow me to perform a system restore. I attempted to uninstall Windows XP and reinstall it but now it wont activate. As soon as the computer turns on, it runs fine until after I type in my log in password. I've tried to start the computer in safe mode but it will not work because I need to activate windows under the normal mode. Because it is a mini I do not have a disk drive, or the disk that came with the computer (it was a gift). I do not want to spend that much money to fix it if I don't need to. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

In theory if you installed the same version of XP that was originally on the machine, you should be able to activate it with the same key. The key should be on a sticker somewhere on the machine case itself.

Does it reject the key when you enter it?

What happens when you type in your password? Is it prompting for the product key, or to activate Windows? If it needs the product key, then this is usually on a sticker on the underside of the system. If it is asking to be activated, then follow the onscreen prompts to do this - it may require you to telephone Microsoft to get an activation key, which should be no problem if you have a genuine version of Windows.
