Hello,

i just bought some a new 1gb compaq sdram pc100 for my very old pc that i have aqcuired but my motherboard wont recognise it when i insert it.

motherboard is:
Board: MicroStar Inc. MS-6340 1.0
Bus Clock: 66 megahertz
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 62710 07/15/97

tis very annoying as i desperately need a bit more ram in this old thing..!! can some1 give me any suggestions as to what i can do.

well i think that ur motherboard is not able to recognize the RAM because
1. u bought an unsuitable RAM (too high or too low frequency)
2. your motherboard cannot take the RAM because the RAM is too new or your motherboard is too old and not designed to fit into RAMs nowadays.
3. u might not have inserted the RAM correctly.
4. your motherboard is faulty.
5. (not likely) your RAM is faulty.

The MS-6340 only supports up to 512Mb in each slot - giving a max of 1Gb. You are trying to put a 1Gb module in which is not compatible. You need something like this.

the manual I've just checked says its even worse than that - a max of 512MB as 2x256MB
however it could be that 512MB sticks weren't available when the manual was written
