Hi,
I need some advice!
I have an Acer Laptop which is about 6 months old.
It's developed a serious problem...
When I boot it up the windows logo comes up as if it's booting, then the screen just stays blank with a mouse pointer (which is movable).
It is running Vista and I don't know how to use this really. I can't get into Safe Mode or anything... if there is one.
I can press F8 and get into boot options... but there is only one.
There weren't any Vista discs supplied so I can't re-install.

What should I do?

Thanks!
Matt.

You mention that you can't get in to Safe Mode, as there is only one option. Can you tell me what the option is? Also, what is the model number of your laptop?

There's an option for loading Windows Vista amd further down there's something for a Memory Check. I think Windows is bust though. But There were no disks for reinstalling. What can I do? Could I just put another copy of Vista on it? Or even XP? Does it have to be a certain one for that Acer?

I've never known a system that gets as far as the Windows logo screen, that doesn't at least allow you to select the option for Safe Mode.

You can put another copy of Vista on the laptop, or XP, or any other operating system you like. If you can get your hands on a Vista installation CD of the same version (Home Premium, or whatever it came with), then you can try installing it with the product key that is on the bottom of the laptop - this is perfectly legal.

Acer normally provide the facility to create a recovery disk. If you did this, then you should be able to reload the system using that (note it will delete all data).

Does it do the same thing everytime you try to boot it? I have a cheap laptop with Vista Basic and it does the same thing very occassionally and just hangs there. I have to remove the battery to kill it off and restart.

But it only does this very occassionally.
