Running XP Home with SP3 on a laptop with built in stereo speakers I find that I get garbled music and when playing CDs, Videos( .ts files from my PVR) the music sounds ok but the voices are extremely weak or totally missing.

My Audio output sounds as if I am listening to the surround sound from a 5.1 system but missing the centre speech channel although i dont know if that is the problem.

My (Acer) laptop is using Realtek HD and I have checked that the Speaker setup is for Laptop stereo speakers and not a 5.1 system.

These problems apply to Realplayer, VLC, Windows Media player and BBC iPlayer. and listening to streaming music online from Last.fm.

The problem began about the time I loaded Realplayer and BBC iPlayer but even though I have removed them the problems persist.

I would try reinstalling the sound drivers for your laptop, see if that makes any difference. Incidentally, have you tried external speakers, or earphones? It could be the speakers are faulty in the laptop - they generally aren't great!

Thanks! reloading the Realtek drivers (from the acer website to ensure I got compatible ones) did the trick.

Many thanks for a speedy reply. In the nicest possible way I hope not to call on your help again, but given Bill-Gates-Ware I will probably have too!
