Hi

I've just bought a Netgear DG834v4 router with built-in modem to replace my unreliable BT one. I've gone through the setup, connected everything as instructed, the power's on, the LAN light is on and the ADSL connection light is on but the internet light doesn't come on and the setup test says the computer can't detect the router. My old modem still works and connects to the internet so it doesn't seem to be a cabling or connection problem. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

was the BT unit a USB modem or did it connect through the ethernet port?

your symptoms suggest either a faulty ethernet port on the PC, a bad ethernet cable, or a cable not fully fitted into the correct socket on the router

The BT was a USB. But the ethernet port on the PC connects to to the LAN port on the router and that's registering okay. Does that just mean it's okay at the router end?

Is there a way of testing the ethernet port to confirm? Presumably it's easy enough to buy a replacement if it is faulty.

only by plugging it into something else and seeing if you get a connection....

its worth checking under "connections" in "internet options" in the control panel that the machine is set to "never dial", but I doubt if that is the problem
bad ethernet port is most likely - unless somehow you've got the vable jammed in the modem socket....
if it is the port, just disable it in the BIOS and then fit a PCI card with a port on it. You can get them for less than 10

Right, I'll do that. Thanks.
