While working on my PC, it spontaneously shuts itself down - almost like a loss of power, yet there is none. Worried that there might be a virus - i have run scans in safe mode and there are no infections (spyware, adware, virus)
The only way to "re-boot" the PC is to unplug it from the tower, and plug it back in and then turn it on. This happens quite often about 8-10 times a day. Any suggestions on what the problem might be?

The problem sounds almost definitely like a hardware problem (ie. the computer itself is faulty). It is either something overheating, a fault with the PSU, or a lose connection inside the PC. I do not think this is a virus.

Is the PC under warranty? If so I would recommend getting a warranty repair on it. If not, we can try to advise on a few things, but it will require opening the PC up and trying things in there.

One simple thing you can try is unplugging everything from the PC, except the monitor, keyboard and mouse to see if the problem continues. It is possible that an external device, like a printer or scanner is causing the problem.

Also, let us know what the operating system is (ie. Windows XP)

Try to find the cause of the problem. You can check the fan is working properly or not, or vacuum the dust. Once done, you can start your computer again but if the problem occurs again, then take help from an expert.
