I have a HP touchsmart pc running Vista. When I turn it on the initial "starting windows" screen has bands of virtical dotted lines all across it - the screen then goes blank. When you turn the power off (which is the only thing i can do) and re-start it general boots ok if I use the "Start windows normally" option rather than the "repair" option. Once running I can re-start it no problem at all.

I have Norton running so I don't think it's a virus... I've reinstalled factory settings and down loaded all the windows updates so I don't think its system software that's corrupted and Ive tried all the diagnostic tools that came with the pc - Please help it's only 18months old!!
Thanks

The GPU for those machines overheat and sometimes damage the rest of the system board at the same time. It's expensive to fix. HP's out of warranty repair service is 200 + parts!

It sounds like you have the beginnings of this problem.

These machines have a 1 year manufacturer warranty. However, because HP know this is a design flaw they have extended the warranty to 18 months. I had another customer with a machine just over 18 months old and they still managed to get HP to fix it free of charge after a lot of ranting and raving and a letter from us.
