Hi, i recently set up a pc for a friend with windows xp pro on it. He has 3 printers - 1 usb, and 2 parallel (HP deskjet 550c and HP laserjet 4L). The problem is, i can't get either of the parallel printers to work on it. I tested them both on a laptop and the 550c works fine, but i can't seem to get the laserjet working on either.

I've tried changing the parallel port mode to eco, ecc etc in the bios, the irq, and various settings in the printer properties, but nothing makes a difference. One thing i noticed though that was when i restart the pc, the 550c makes some noise as if it is receiving a signal from the pc.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong? They are driving me round the bend and i've tried everything i can think of!

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Peter

Hi Peter, welcome to the forums.

Given that you are having problems with the Laserjet on another PC as well, I think it's best we start by trying to get the 550C working first. Connect it using the same cable that worked on the other PC, go in to the BIOS and set the LPT mode to ECP. Boot in to Windows, and uninstall all of the printers that are there both from the installed printers and Add/Remove Programs. Now go in to Device Manager and let us know what is showing in the Ports section.

Thanks for the reply, sorry its taken me a while to get back to you. I just set the port mode to ECP and removed all of the printers. Under ports in device manager, there is Communications Port (COM1) and ECP Printer Port (LPT1). The DMA is set to 3 in the bios and there are no conflicts. What should i do now? I tried it on this mode before but it didn't work.

OK, don't plug the printer in just yet.

Boot the computer in Safe Mode, go in to Device Manager and remove all the items from the Ports section.

Connect the printer to the LPT port and turn it on, reboot the computer in Normal Mode. Hopefully the computer will now recognise the printer. If it asks to install any drivers, cancel the wizard. Now install the HP printer drivers.

No, this didn't sort the problem. Printer still didn't detect and adding manually gives the same result. Could it be a motherboard problem? The onboard ethernet won't install with the official drivers either, and using the network card from their old pc works, but the internet just drops off (and hardly ever works)

It could be a motherboard issue, however I've not seen a similar example of this happening. I'm not sure what more to suggest here. I would possibly try booting the PC with Linux and seeing if you can get any printers working in Linux, this will confirm if it is a hardware problem or just something not quite right in Windows. Ubuntu can be booted from CD, or USB stick so as not to impact your current OS installation.
