I have an HP Pavilion dv6000 notebook with Windows Vista. When I close the lid, Windows goes into a standby mode. This is fine when I want to conserve battery life but there are times when I want to leave the computer on at home to finish large downloads.

Most laptops are set up to do the same thing.

Click Start | Control Panel | Power Options.

Then go to the 'Advanced' tab.

Now you can chose what the machine does when you close the lid.
