Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help me with this. Basically a few days ago my computer was hacked by a virus. The effects were the usual change in desktop (with links to dowload anti-virus software etc), I was cut out from certain administrator functions (such as changin the screen parametres, or accessing the task manager after ctrl+alt+Del) and my start menu was completely changed. My c: link in My Computer also disappered. Also, my computer was constantly attempting to connect to the internet, with fake windows virus alert msgs. In addition to all this i had "virus alert"written everywhere there was a clock (files, icon tray at the bottom of the screen). I immediately disconnected the computer from the internet, and proceeded to hunting down the files and deleting them. I managed to delete the actual virus, plus most of the other files that were constantly attempting to get me to connect to the internet.

At this point, once the pop-ups stopped, I managed to change the desktop, and the computer was no longer automatically trying to connect me to the internet, i felt safe enough to go online and look for a comprehensive solution. I downloaded two programs: SpyBot Search and Destroy and AML Free Registry Cleaner. This is where I screwed up.

I used the Registry Cleaner immediately - and my computer was not allowing me to back up. The Reg Cleaner found loads of errors, and since I clicked "fix all" the laptop hasn't been the same. Immediately after I used the SpyBot program, which identified all the files connected to the virus and deleted them all. This enabled me to once more access task manager, it got rid of the "virus alert" message, and generally all the symptoms of the virus.

As of now, I have problems connecting to the internet - even though I tried to re-install the hardware. The c: is still cloaked in My Computer. When I turn the computer on, it never goes immediately to the desktop. I have to ctrl+alt+del, disconnect the user, and re-connect. I have tried restoring to previous configurations, but it hasn't managed to do it.

My feeling is that the Reg Cleaner cleaned too much, and now I'm missing important reg files and keys. I would like to know how to fix this. Alternatively, I am happy to format (I have an external hdd to which i can transfer important docs) but my CD-ROM drive hasn't worked in a while and the laptop doesn't have a floppy drive (although I have an external floppy).

I hope you can help, and I will be very grateful for any pointers,

Alessandro

It sounds like things are quite messed up there. I would suggest running HijackThis in Safe Mode and posting the log. From this we may be able to clean things up a little and ensure there is nothing nasty running before trying to fix the damage.

It would help if you can let us know what version of Windows you are using.

Run HijackThis again in Safe Mode and tick the following entries, then fix them:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1ED8C6DA-6421-4C89-A772-B757F96CA697} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hgGAqpOg.dll
O2 - BHO: LPVideoPlugin - {724B80DE-D97A-4384-8960-6AF64CE5BBB3} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\LPVideo.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {FF3F0F03-0F01-131A-A3F9-08F02B23E0CC} - http://66.117.37.13/dba250.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: hgGAqpOg - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\hgGAqpOg.dll
O21 - SSODL: neksolda - {6DE4AFF3-7B06-4DE1-BDE4-80680B6657F0} - C:\WINDOWS\neksolda.dll (file missing)

Now find and delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\hgGAqpOg.dll

Now restart the computer into normal mode and see how it is. If you can run HijackThis from normal mode, then post an updated log. If not then post a log from Safe Mode.

Hey softstag. thanks for getting back to me!!

Ok, ive deleted the keys and I'm rebooting. I wasnt able to delete the .dll file: it tells me the file is in use by another program and to shut down the program.

I've rebooted in normal mode, but its still taking ages. I press enter after the box that asks for the name and password, loads my personal settings, and then all i can see is the desktop (with no icons) for ages. It takes about 5 minutes to go from there to the proper desktop.

I'm going to try and delete that file you told me and run hijack this now....

Ok I get the same two errors at startup now: one is to do with the file WS2_32.dll not being valid anymore, another is to do with the Toshiba energy saving feature going into an error and closing down (code 0x0).

I still can't delete that .dll file. Here is the hijackthis log in normal mode:

First, lets see if we can delete that file, to do this download Killbox from http://killbox.net/

Run the program and put C:\WINDOWS\system32\hgGAqpOg.dll in the section for Full Path of File to Delete then click on the red circle with the X in. This should delete the file for you. If it doesn't, try selecting the option to End Explorer Shell while Killing File. Again if this doesn't work select Delete on Reboot and it will delete the file when the PC reboots.

After this is done, reboot and see how the computer is - let us know. Also, post a new HijackThis log.

Ok I downloaded Killbox. I tried deleting the file in normal mode first. I put in the full path etc, but Killbox told me it couldnt delete the file. I ticked the "end explorer shell" box, but that didn't work either. I then ticked the box "Delte on reboot" and pressed the X. It asked me whether I wanted to reboot now, I said yes. It did the countdown and then I got this message:

PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!

I click on OK and the computer doesn't reboot and the file is still there. I even tried "Replace file on reboot" with the file to replace it as "Dummy" but that didn't work either.

I then entered the computer in safe mode. Tried the same things all over again and get the same result (i.e. the message above). Is this the file from hell which can never be deleted?

I'm sure we can get this deleted.... Please try the following:
Arrow Insert your Windows XP CD and restart the computer
Arrow Hopefully the computer will boot from the CD (it may ask you to press a button or select a menu option to boot from CD, if so do this)
Arrow When the welcome screen comes up, press R to start the Recovery Console
Arrow It will prompt you for the Administrator password, type this in, it may be blank, in which case leave blank and press Enter
Arrow You should now be at a command prompt. Type the following pressing Enter after each line:
Code:
c:
cd \WINDOWS\system32\
ren hgGAqpOg.dll hgGAqpOg.del
exit

The computer should now reboot, remove the CD and go in to Windows. Let me know if there were any problems with this, if not, please post a new HijackThis log.

Unfortunately this is my big issue. The CD Rom in my computer no longer works - otherwise I probably would have already re-installed everything to begin with....

Do you have a working floppy drive on the system?
