A friend of the family wanted me to look at their HP laptop, it basically started but then switched off, even in safe mode. I tried various ways to try get around it but nothing. Finally, on their request I reinstalled Vista 32HP. Now the problem is that the sticker underneath is so damaged and worn that a new license key was inevitably needed.

Before the reinstall however, I phoned MS and explained the situation, they requested photographic proof and then emailed me a new key. No matter what I tried it didn't work. I called them again and explained I have a retail copy of Vista from the tech guy where I used to work. He uses it regularly, no problems.

But MS told me that this retail copy, though perfectly legal to use as JonS stated previously in another topic, is INCOMPATIBLE with an OEM key. I'm puzzled for two reasons about this.

First, I read somewhere on this forum that Vista can be used with any key and any version, if I remember correctly XP didn't have this flexibility.

Second, I've already recovered my own desktop PC using this same disc and the OEM key on it's own sticker.

Why am I having problems with the laptop? And why are MS saying it's because Retail and OEM can't be mixed?

The laptop works fine btw, I just need to activate windows.

Thanks for your help.

Curious
my experience is that the disks are interchangeable
It may be that later versions were locked down more....

simplest route is going to be to download from here
http://downloadsnfix.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/microsoft-windows-vista-official-iso.html

however note that you are going to have to create the CD image yourself from the various parts
