I'm running Vista Basic. I have selected pictures from multiple sources to be used as desktop background in the past. The location of folders which no longer exists are still being displayed in Control panel/Personalization/Desktop Background/ Location. How do I remove these locations. Thanks.

Try rebuilding the index:
Arrow Open the Control Panel
Arrow Double click on Indexing Options
Arrow Click on Advanced
Arrow Click Rebuild

Copy the following code in to Notepad and save as bg_history_clear.reg
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Wallpapers\Images]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Wallpapers\Images]

Running this file will clear all the non-default locations. Please ensure that the Desktop Background applet is closed when you run this, and also note that you will have to accept several warnings before the file runs.
