A friend of mine gave me an old computer a few years ago. It was messed up when I got it so I proceeded to download a ton of free music from limewire. Needless to say it messed up even more an already outdated computer. I no longer use the computer at all, but kept it around just so I could use all the music on it. It had been some time since I had actually attempted to turn it on, but I got an ipod as a gift last weekend and had hoped to put all of that music from that computer on it. I hooked up the computer, but when I tried to turn it on it made cricket noises and screeching and after many unsuccessful attempts to turn it on I gave up. Please help! I need all of that music!

Free music downloaded with Limewire... Sounds like illegally downloaded music to me....

OK. The Computer. When you turn it on, do you get any beeps, any lights, what happens with the monitor? Are you able to identify where the screeching and cricket noises come from?

There are beeps and a green light comes on both on the computer and the monitor. It starts to boot up and sometimes even boots to the login screen but the mouse won't respond so I can't log on. I'm not sure where the sounds are coming from. It also started screeching really loud. Please Help! Thank you!

It sounds like the cricket noise may be the hard drive, in which case it may have had it and you may have no chance of getting you data back.

The fact the mouse doesn't work is odd. Check it is correctly connected to the PC.

The screeching is probably a fan, although this could be the hard drive also. I would recommend removing the PC cover (with it turned off) and then turn it on, see if you can better identify where the noises are coming from. It is perfectly safe to do the, so long as you keep you fingers, pets and children out if it whilst turned on.
