Hello! I have a desktop computer and several days ago my old 500W power supply burnt out (from overheating I suppose) while the computer was on. I replaced it with a new one, 750W, but when I turned it on everything was working properly except for the fact that no USB devices were recognized. I have 2 USB 2.0 front ports and four rear ones. Power reaches all of them, since LEDs on devices connected light up, but OS does not indicate any devices being connected. I tried switching off the PC from the mains, pressing and holding the power button, even removed the battery on the motherboard and reset the BIOS settings. Nothing changed. I have a dual-boot PC with Windows 7 and Gentoo Linux. Neither of the two operating systems give any errors concerning the USB ports and neither recognizes anything plugged in. My PC is:
MB: ASUS P5B
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.33 GHz
HDD: Samsung HD403LJ ATA 400 GB
I don't have a USB keyboard nor a mouse to try and see if they work during BIOS boot. Does anyone have any suggestions?

To be honest it sounds like the USB controller has blown when the PSU failed. It's failing in 2 operating systems, so you've pretty much ruled out it being a software problem. I'd suggest that you add a USB card to your system to give you working USB ports.

I thought it must be a hardware problem as well since both OS indicate the same. Thank you for your suggestion, I suppose I will give it a try.
In the mean time if anyone else has ideas, I'm all ears.

Your only option is to do as Spftstag says, and fit an expansion card with USB ports. However two words of advice

1) disable the failed onboard posts iin the BIOS. You don;t want them causing further problems

2) It may be that your problems originate from a faulty USB device which has drawn too much current and burnt out the controller chip. Be especially wary of external USB hubs (even more so if they are the unpowered variety)
If any USB devices show signs of msbehaviour, or overheating - bin them

Thank you for you advice. I was looking through some USB cards and this one caught my eye:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002VY53ZK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=ACWDSEP0MBN87
I have a question - since it includes internal ports, is it possible that I connect my front USBs to one of them instead of the MB, since they are very convenient for flash drives and cell phone. If it is possible what kind of cable do I need?

From the image it's difficult to see the connectors, however I would imagine it would be the standard internal type, which will be the same as your motherboard, so you can attach your front USBs, simply by moving from attaching to the motherboard to this card.

Thank you. In this case I will order it and post the result when it arrives Smile

It took its time, but it arrived today and it's all working properly - even the front USBs after being connected to the card. Thanks, everyone!
