Hello

There's a file on my desktop which I can't seem to delete. It's an unknown file type, 0 bytes.

Msg box appears when trying to delete: Could not find this item. This is no longer in C:\Users\User\Desktop.

Tried restarting PC but didn't work.
Vista Basic

Thanks very much.

Does the file appear in Safe Mode, and if so can you delete it from there?

The file is probably loaded into memory at startup. Do a google search for

"Unlocker". It is a free programme. Just install it and then right click on the

file. Unlocker will delete it on the net boot.

Lol that killbox website looks dodgy, I can confirm though that the program killbox.exe for download there is fine.

You can also try this http://www.filehippo.com/download_unlocker/

Tried safe mode, file wouldn't delete.
Killbox didn't work either: "This file does not seem to exist"

Any other suggestions?
Thanks very much.

well i also have this problem. can you firstly move the file? Or is it because it is "not there" so that you can't delete it? Because if you can move it, i suggest a nice way to destroy the file. Use an application like unlocker to move it to a 3.5inch Floppy disk drive or a thumbdrive that you do not want. Once the file has been MOVED, then destroy the floppy disk or thumbdrive. However, this is only the last resort as you can prevent wastage if you can delete the file though.

The file is visible on Desktop

Can't move the file or else I would copy paste it into Recycle Bin.

Try running Error-Checking on the hard drive in Vista.

One guaranteed way to access locked files or delete file no accessible is to remove the hard drive and connect it to another machine running windows using a SATA/PATA to USB adapter.

Then once you have set yourself up as owner of the file you have full control whether it is a system file or not.

If you still can't delete it then it may be a bad sector or incorrect entry in the file allocation table.
