hi everyone,

Hope someone can help me, pl.

Using Add & Remove to uninstall Shields Antivirus, I did not know to click the 2 boxes asking if settings, or something, should be removed too. Things were fine and I used AVG Free for a couple of years but recently began getting warnings to upgrade to the new 9.0 version.

Problems began when I tried to install AVG 9.0 and was prompted to uninstall Shields 2006 but there is no trace of it anywhere except a reference in Security Centre which warns that it is out of date. (I have now disabled that monitoring) but how do I get into Security Centre to remove the Shield Antivirus altogether?

I've tried ignoring the prompt to uninstall it but AVG will not work properly, in fact I cannot even get online and have removed it.
Hope the explanation is very simple as I'm not well-versed in computers.
regards, I'm using Windows XP and IE 7

I'm not that familiar with Shields AV, however usually the best way to remove a program like this is to reinstall it, then uninstall it fully with it's uninstall process.

this tool may enable you to remove all installed traces from the registry
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Microsoft suupply it for just this kind of problem

Afterwards its worth downloading and running CCleaner - ensure you run the registry cleanup part fo the program as well

further to this I've just found one webpage which claims that "The Shield" is in fact a rebranded version of Bitdefender antivirus, and that running this tool will completely remove it
http://downloads.pcsecurityshield.com/software/2010/BitDefender_Uninstall_Tool.exe

worth a try
