Win 8 metro apps don't have close buttons, which at first sight leaves you wondering how to close the app. With Win 8 apps are suspended when you switch to another app and they are a very little drain on your system, Win 8 will automatically shut them down if you need the resouces saving their content first of course so you can carry on where you left off on relaunch.

But, if you really want to close the app, move the mouse up to the top of the screen and when it turns from the normal mouse pointer to a hand, hold down the left mouse button and drag it down the screen. Your app should shrink to a thumbnail which you can drag off the screen to close it.

And! good old Alt + F4 still works as well to close an unresponsive app or press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to launch Task Manager and close any non responsive apps that way as you could with previous versions of windows.
