I am running Windows 98SE. I have two big problems and a lot of smaller problems
#1 So far all scanning and detector software I've downloaded does not run under Windows 98 and I'm sure there are some bugs in my system.
#2 I can't get a WD Element USB2 1 TB disk to run. I have downloaded many drivers and none of them works. Will the Driver I see on your site handle this Disk under Windows 98SE? |

For issue #1, I'm not really sure what software you are trying to use. If you are referring to software that will tell you what drivers you need for your hardware, this tends to be fairly unreliable on most systems. Best to go to the manufacturer's website and get appropriate drivers from there.
For issue #2, the generic Windows 98 USB Mass Storage drivers should allow Windows 98 to detect the hard drive. One issue you will probably have though is that Windows 98 does not support any file system that can handle a terrabyte effectively. You will need to partition the hard drive in to FAT32 partitions, and format each partition, before Windows 98 will allow use of the drive. Doing this will destroy all data on the drive. This is a limitation of Windows 98, and not the drivers. _________________ "Microsoft programs are generally bug-free. I think what he was getting at was the need for antivirus / antimalware software
Virtually all the mainstream security companies have withdrawn Windows 9X support. Only one left that I can think of that I'd trust would be Clamwin - but that does not have a real-time scanner. You can get round that by integrating it with WinPooch, but as WinPooch itself has not been updated for around three years, then the solution is not ideal
Also you'd need a Win9X compatible firewall, and again thats difficult. I don't trust any of the ones currently available. Best option is probably to use an out-of-date version of ZoneAlarn and to turn off the automatic updates.
Again, not ideal
In reality, anyone using Windows 9x on the internet nowadays is heading for a heap of problems
As for the external hard drive problem, this could be due to data bandwidth: I'd guess that the Windows 98 PC only has USB1.1 not USB2) and limited RAM so affecting buffering ability |
