Hi,

I have two problems. My motherboard is called P5AD2-E Premium. I installed windows 7 however Asus stopped supporting this motherboard's drivers. They don't have any windows 7 drivers. The operating system works relatively well. Windows 7 found drivers from online and I am able to install using xp compatibility.

My first issue is related to sound. I have 7.1 speaker system. The sound is onboard. I was able to install the driver and I can hear sound coming out of all speakers however in windows 7 it does not let me select 7.1 surround sound. There is only the option for Stereo. Also the C-Media utility does not play sound when clicking the speaker icons. I therefore cannot make use of 7.1 surround sound. My question is if I buy a 7.1 sound card will windows allow me to select 7.1 surround or will i face the same issue i have currently therefore making the purchase pointless due to the motherboard chipset drivers not functional. That is my guess but I cannot try it without buying.

My second issue is related to DVD burner. I am able to read CD's but not burn anything. I'm guessing this is also related to the drivers not being fully functional.

Any suggestions appreciated.

thats a cmi9880 chip
I found problems getting that work work in Vista, let alone Win7. It would apparently install correctly, but not play anything.

If you disable it in BIOS, and then fit a replacement card which the manufacturer states IS compatible with Win7 then you should be OK. However check carefully: a lot of AC97, and even early Hi-def chips wont work in Vista / 7. And make sure you uninstall ALL traces of the cmi9880 drivers
The problem is nothing to do with 7.1 vs stereo. The problem is simply: that chip will not work in Vista. Thats why tehre are no drivers for it, and why Asus don't support it

As to the otther issue. You don't need drivers for DVD burning, but you DO need burning software.... what do you have installed?
