Are you booting the system off the disk adn doing a clean installation? Or are you trying to do an upgrade by running the setup from within windows?

You cannot do an upgrade with that disk - its an OEM version for new clean installations only. You HAVE to boot the machine from the CD and install that way. Make sure you back up any data first. In theory the old files should be dumped into a saved folder named windows.old - but don't trust it to work. Assume you'll lose everything and take backups first

I am trying to do a clean installation but when i put the disc i get this message
this installation disc isn`t compatible with your version of windows ,To upgrade you need the correct installation disc. For more information check your computer system information. To install new copy of windows restart your computer using installation disc and then select custom(advanced)

why is this message coming up i thought it was just a matter of loading disc and following instructions i`m not really PC smart so don`t know a lot about computers if you bould help i would be very grateful

you've not understood my question. That disk will only give that error if you try to install from within an existing windows installation i.e. if windows is already running, you insert the disk and try to run setup. THAT WON'T WORK with that disk.
You HAVE to change the boot sequence so that at startup the machine boots off the Windows setup DVD - NOT off the hard drive. Some machines you have to set the BIOS to boot in the correct sequence, others you can press a key at startup to get a boot options menu (often F12 or F8 ). if thats the case there should be a message at startup "press x for boot menu" or similar.
