Can anybody help me? I am unable to normally log into my 98SE computer after some changes I made that I can't remember what they were. Can anybody tell me how to do a "system restore to a previous time" on Windows 98 SE? I am able to log on in Safe Mode, and I scanned the computer for system health and viruses and there are no issues that way, but I have no sound.
The computer starts up ok, but when I try to normally log into windows, the following message box comes up:
" PCI multimedia audio device
Windows has found new hardware and is locating the software for it."

This disappears 2 seconds later and then a Msgsrv32 message box comes up, saying an error has occurred in your program... ect. When I click close the computer hangs.
Does anybody have any helpful advice please? Thank you so much.
Slopoke.

As mentioned above, System Restore does not feature in Windows 98. From the description of the problem you are having, I'm not sure that reinstalling Windows is the answer. It would be helpful to know the full error message you get relating to Msgsrv32. I think that this error is caused by a problem with the audio drivers and not Windows itself.

If you can boot the PC in Safe Mode, and look in Device Manager, under the heading Sound Video and Game Controllers, then post the list of items you get there. This may help to resolve the problem.

Also, if possible, disconnect the audio devices from the computer. Once Windows 98 recognizes something as "new", it usually doesn't rest untill it feels you've installed it properly.
