Installed drivers nusb320-Eng-98FE.exe. External hard drive now works fine.

The Windows 98 Service Pack was not installed.

Whilst System Information still shows Win98 version 4.10.1998, right-clicking on 'My Computer' now shows version 4.10.2222 (was 4.10.1998).

Is this confusion between versions likely to cause any problems when installing programs or updates in the future?

Thanks.

This is normal and nothing to worry about. The drivers have to update some critical Windows files to later versions in order to get the USB mass storage to work; consequently the version number on Windows will change like you report. This should not cause any issues, and I know this has been downloaded and installed on many systems without problem.
