Hi guys

I am trying to sort out this laptop, Windows Vista. It was logging into Windows in normal mode and then freezing after all the desktop stuff had appeared on screen. It used to boot into safe mode but this has also stopped now as it hangs after listing a bunch of drivers that it is loading (crcdisk i think). I'd hate to think that the only repair option is to restore it to factory defaults but I'm fast running out of ideas. Even chkdsk /r just hangs.

Cheers for any help
D

If chkdsk hangs, then it would suggest that there is a hardware problem.

I would suggest trying to boot from a Linux LiveCD to see if the system will run Linux OK or if that hangs as well. If that hangs then you have a hardware problem and no amount of restoring to factory settings will help.

And if it doesn't hang with a Linux CD (have one at home I will try later)?

Then do a restore. Of course this will be destructive to any data on the system, but I think it's the only real option.

If safe mode boot hangs at the CRC check then its a good indication something is wrong with the hard drive
Could be a failing drive, corrupted data, virus/rootkit.
Personally I'd download the correct test disk for that drive and check the disk out for errors. You may find it needs a low level format, or it may be bad. Or maybe just scrambled - the test should tell you
What drive is it?

Hi Jon

The test disk thing sounds interesting, can you tell me more about that? Oh and a bit of an update, a Linux live CD worked just fine, saw the drive and everything.
