suddenly the screen went black the pc apparently boots up ok and lights up without beeps. The monitor however has a green power light for 5 seconds and displays video input no signal then goes off and the light is then amber

i have checked connections seem to be ok. ive tried plugging the monitor to this laptop and it does the same thing via the serial port

im now stuck , is it the graphics card dead ? monitor ? or the desktop base ?

It sounds like your Monitor may have died. When testing it in the Laptop, are you sure that you were sending a signal, Laptops normally have a Fn and F-key combination that scrolls through the various external monitor and internal display combinations. Very often it's default setting is not to output to the external monitor. Can you borrow a known working monitor to check your PC?
